sketch—new year&039;s day, 1790

to rs dunlop

this day, ti ds th&039; exhated cha;

to run the elveonth&039;s length aga:

i see, the old bald-pated fellow,

with ardent eyes, plexion sallow,

adjt the unipair&039;d ache,

to wheel the eal, dull route

the absent lover, or heir,

va assail hi with their prayer;

deaf as y friend, he sees the press,

nor akes the hour one ont less,

will you (the ajor&039;s with the hounds,

the happy tenants share his rounds;

i&039;s fair rachel&039;s care to-day,

and bloog keith&039;s engad with gray)

fro hoewife cares a ute borrow,

(that grandchild&039;s cap will do to-orrow,)

and jo with a-oralizg;

this day&039;s propitio to be wise

first, what did yesternight deliver?

“another year has gone for ever”

and what is this day&039;s strong sugstion?

“the passg ont&039;s all we rest on!”

rest on—for what? what do we here?

or why regard the passg year?

will ti, a&039;d with proverb&039;d lore,

add to our date one ute ore?

a few days ay—a few years t—

repose the silent dt

then, is it wise to dap our bliss?

yes—all such reangs are aiss!

the voice of nature loudly cries,

and any a ssa fro the skies,

that thg never dies:

that on his frail, uncerta state,

hang atters of eternal weight:

that future life worlds unknown

t take its hue fro this alone;

whether as heavenly glory bright,

or dark as isery&039;s woeful night

sce then, y honour&039;d first of friends,

on this poor beg all depends,

let th&039; iportant now eploy,

and live as those who never die

tho&039; you, with days and honours crown&039;d,

witness that filial circle round,

(a sight life&039;s rrows to repulse,

a sight pale envy to nvulse),
